For almost 11 years, Stephanie Steiner has worked diligently in the Adult and Pediatric Burn Institute with her team to ensure that as many patients as possible can ring the ‘survivor bell.’
“Each and every patient has sustained some level of life-altering injury with its associated trauma and stress of recovery,” she shares. “Some days are momentous steps forward in recovery; other days are for sharing tears and worries. What does make me feel like I have made a difference is being part of a huge team that celebrates every patient’s unique journey to survivorship. Here, it is signified by ringing a ‘survivor bell.’”
Steiner notes that her team is all the more strengthened by their encouragement of personal and professional advancement, while still making time to take care of their wellbeing through Akron Children’s mental health resources and wellness programs. With onsite and online relaxation options like yoga, meditation and exercise classes, finding a work-life balance feels achievable. No matter what situation arises, Steiner knows she has a team that will support her and encourage her career growth. She notes that there are ever-expanding mentorship and peer support programs to further support herself and her team.
“Much of my leadership works hard to protect the work life balance of our provider team by being easily accessible, flexible, and supportive when life may throw a curve ball,” Steiner says.
Akron Children’s is proud to provide better care to not only our patients, but our providers. Making a difference in someone’s life begins by making a healthy change in your own.

The culture at Akron Children’s is centered around being the best caregiver and provider we can be. Working within a pediatric facility has a whole different feel—there are smiles and “good mornings” everywhere you turn!
