Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police, assists in the supervision of assigned personnel within the Department of Public Safety. Ensures the department is operating at optimal effectiveness and efficiency. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.
Responsibilities:
- Contributes to patient safety by:
- Supporting the System-wide programs and policies addressing a safe environment for patients and the reporting of safety concerns to the appropriate individuals.
- Maintains a basic knowledge of regulations regarding safety programs set forth by federal, state and local authorities for health care facilities to include Joint Commission, OSHA and CMS requirements.
- Oversees work outcomes of assigned personnel within their assigned Division or Sub-Division.
- Assumes command in the absence of the Director and Chief at crime scenes and civil/internal disturbances or system/hospital emergencies.
- Shapes customer service culture through messaging, coaching and appropriate personal actions.
- Ensures the effective and efficient daily operations of the department by:
- Resolving problems regarding equipment, communications, and support systems.
- Making recommendations for process improvements.
- Partnering with the Detective Bureau on internal investigations.
- Making self available all shifts to meet department goals.
- Extracts, compiles, and interprets a range of data from written sources, individuals, and/or databases. Reports on findings and makes recommendations as warranted.
- Assists the Director and Chief by:
- Planning, coordinating, and overseeing departmental strategic initiatives.
- Planning and coordinating multiple projects and special events, while ensuring that critical business objectives are met.
- Assisting with reviewing CHMCA policies and Department of Public Safety Policies as needed.
- Serving on various hospital committees as assigned.
- Performs other functionally related duties as assigned by the Director and Chief, Public Safety.

Technical Expertise
- Experience compiling, and interpreting a range of data from written sources, individuals, and/or databases.
- Reports on findings and makes recommendations as warranted.
- Experience coordinating communications and acting as a liaison between public safety and outside resources.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential CHMCA data and resources.
- Experience interacting with all levels of staff, from front line to senior leadership.
- Demonstrated high level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and five years of job related experience. In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, possesses an Associate degree in Criminal Justice or Security Administration/Management and a minimum of 10 years of job related experience in a hospital law enforcement/private security setting.
- Possesses a current OPOTA Basic Police Academy certification.
- Required to achieve and maintain department's qualifying firearms standards for duration of employment.
- Demonstrated high level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to interact with all levels of staff, from front line to senior leadership.
- Ability to handle situations with tact and confidentiality.
- High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential CHMCA data and resources.
- Background check that is acceptable to the Department of Public Safety Director and Chief.
- FEMA classes IS-100, IS 100.hc, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-235.
- Must be able to maintain minimum skill based competencies as identified by the department during term of employment.
- Possesses a valid Ohio driver's license (and ability to obtain and maintain eligibility of insurability as determined by the CHMCA insurance carrier's requirements to operate CHMCA vehicles) and reliable transportation to report to alternate sites.
- Experience in Public Safety operations, protective/security services preferred.
- Experience within a healthcare provider organization preferred.
- Demonstrate psychological fitness commensurate with the role of an armed officer, evaluated by a Psychologist designated by the Department of Public Safety Director and Chief.
Possesses a valid State driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain insurability as determined by the ACH insurance carrier's requirements.
An annual physical is required to be completed with the Akron Children's Hospital Employee Health Department.
