Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs routine and complex laboratory testing and evaluates results for accuracy and clinical relevance to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role assists in the collection, processing, and analysis of physician‑ordered tests and applies scientific judgment to recognize test interdependencies and physiological factors that influence results, ensuring high‑quality laboratory information that supports clinical decision‑making.
Responsibilities:
1. Follows procedures for collecting, processing biological specimens and evaluating specimens for acceptability.
2. Exercises professional judgment in order to prioritize and evaluate varying test requests efficiently.
3. Utilizes independent judgment in performing laboratory tests of all complexities using a variety of techniques, instrumentation, and equipment with accuracy and precision.
4. Demonstrates scientific knowledge of testing principles, analytic procedures, and their results allowing for appropriate interpretation in conjunction with disease and physiology. Integrates data to resolve problems. Reports and communicates results appropriately according to policy.
5. Performs interprets and monitors quality control, calibrates and troubleshoots equipment, assists with implementation and validation of new equipment, and/or methods, documents maintenance and corrective action, performs proficiency testing according to regulatory standards.
6. Assists in training new employees as needed and is able to perform competence assessment on tests of all CLIA complexities.
7. Performs tasks efficiently and maintains a neat and safe work area.
8. Participates in education efforts of the department.
9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psych/ social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
10. Other duties as required.
Other information:
Technical Expertise
1. Prior work experience in a clinical laboratory setting including recent experience in multiple laboratory disciplines is preferred.
2. Experience with Laboratory Information Systems preferred.
3. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
1. Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or other science, with successful completion of an internship in Medical Technology or equivalent experience in a laboratory as deemed appropriate by ASCP and CLIA criteria required
3. Certification: Certification or eligibility for certification by ASCP at the Technologist level or grandfathered at the Technologist level as deemed appropriate by ASCP and CLIA criteria.
4. Years of relevant experience: 2 years is preferred
5. Year of supervisor experience: none
