Summary:
The Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police leads the hospital's Department of Public Safety, overseeing all security, law enforcement, and collaborating on emergency response operations. The Chief ensures a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, visitors, and hospital assets, in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards. This role also serves as the primary liaison with law enforcement agencies and local authorities.Responsibilities:
1. Develops and implements comprehensive security, safety, and emergency response strategies aligned with hospital goals and regulatory requirements.
2. Leads all law enforcement and security operations, including patrol, investigations, and crisis response, ensuring effective incident management.
3. Oversees parking and traffic management across all campuses, ensuring accessibility, enforcement, and operational efficiency.
4. Ensures emergency preparedness through training, drills, and contingency planning for a range of potential incidents and crises.
5. Supervises and develops departmental staff, fostering a culture of professionalism, performance, and continuous improvement.
6. Builds and maintains partnerships with internal departments, local law enforcement, and external agencies to enhance hospital-wide safety efforts.
7. Ensures compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., OSHA, HIPAA, fire codes), supporting hospital accreditation and safety audits.
8. Manages departmental budgets and resources, including procurement and staffing, to maintain cost-effective and efficient operations.
9. Serves as a security advisor to hospital leadership, offering expert guidance on high-risk situations, policy decisions, and strategic planning.
10. Acts as incident commander during emergencies, coordinating cross-functional responses to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

Technical Expertise
1. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with internal departments, law enforcement, and public safety agencies.
2. Proficient in managing and operating security systems, including surveillance, access control, and emergency response tools.
3. Proven leadership in complex policing environments, with a commitment to evidence-based practices, transparency, and accountability.
4. Experience in instructional delivery or training in law enforcement/security preferred.
5. Applies a service-oriented, inclusive leadership style that promotes equity, respect, and high team performance.
6. Skilled in the strategic oversight of safety and security operations in fast-paced, high-risk settings.
Education and Experience
1. Education:
Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Public Administration, or a related field is required. Master's degree preferred.
2. Licensure:
Must hold an active Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification or obtain it within one year of hire.
3. Certification:
Completion of a recognized leadership program is preferred (e.g., FBI National Academy, FBI Command College, FBI LEEDA Trilogy, CLEE, PELC, or Southern Police Institute).
4. Years of Relevant Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of progressive law enforcement or security leadership experience, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
5. Years of Supervisory Experience:
Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory or command-level leadership role.
